Don’t declaw your cat

Seriously tho, declawing your cat is basically mutilation, and its is a procedure that it never done for the sake of the animal.

(tl;dr: at the bottom)

Declawing is a serious surgical amputation that some vets even opt out of offering and many counties/states/countries have bans on because of how terrible it is for the cat. It causes long lasting problems that end up permanently crippling the cat.

First declawing isn’t just the removal of the cats nail, it’s the amputation of the last joint in each cat’s toe (that’s 10 separate amputations) in order to remove the nail and accompanying cartilage; all of which which are important to help a cat balance properly, climb, and defend themselves, and serve other functions.

The surgery causes long lasting pain. There is always the possibly that the nails may grow back inside of the paw, which is impossible for anyone to see. Soon there is agradual weakening of leg, shoulder, and back muscles, and because of impaired balance caused by the procedure, declawed cats have to relearn to walk, much as a person would after losing their toes.

Other complications caused by this surgery may be:

  • Adverse reaction to anesthetic
  • Gangrene, which can lead to limb amputation
  • Hemorrhaging
  • Permanent nerve damage
  • Persistent pain
  • Reluctance to walk
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Sequestrum (bone chips), requiring additional surgery
  • Skin disorders

(note: a few of these, like adverse reaction to anesthetic or sequsetrum, are general concerns with most surgical procedures but could cause problems specific to declawing none the less.)

If you are not prepared to deal with the fact that the cat may scratch and tear up furniture or other household items you are not prepared to house that cat.

If you are not prepared to deal with that fact that the cat may scratch you or someone else you are not prepared to house that cat.

If you are not prepared to take simpler and safer methods, such as training or regularly trimming it’s nail, to deal with any scratching habits the cat may have, you are not prepared to house that cat and should rethink doing so.

I don’t really understand how that is a question up for discussion on television news. I mean, even putting aside the gajillion ways that white people are privileged by, for instance, being able to think that whiteness is “normal,” studying world history from Eurocentric perspectives,  and etc etc:
- White people are less likely to be arrested for the same crime than black people, and black people serve longer (much longer!) sentences than white people.
- Marijuana use is similar among black and white populations in the U.S., but young African Americans are more than THREE TIMES more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession or use than white Americans.
- Racial bias in hiring in the U.S. is well-documented and persistent.
- African American students are far more likely to be punished in schools, even though they are not much more likely to break school rules than their white peers.
- Even after accounting for reasons like education disparity, geographical distribution, and occupation, there is a persistent wage gap: White people make are paid more than African Americans due to racial discrimination.
- White people in the U.S. on average have lower mortgage rates than African Americans.
White privilege is a fact of every facet of American life. I realize I’m mostly preaching to the choir here, but this is not a political issue or a subject for debate. It is well-documented and irrefutable.

Cat calling in a nutshell (via Huffpo)

Possible causes for such a situation to happen.
a) “Catcaller” was asshole
b) “Catcaller” didn’t know how to communicate with people
c) Facial expressions may have caused “Catcaller” to be triggered.
d) Victim didn’t like to take compliments (Being called beautiful is not sexually suggestive and thus isn’t really a catcall) and didn’t thank for a simple compliment, leading to an enraged reaction from the “Catcaller”.
e) Victim was an asshole and did something in the silence.
f) “Catcaller” was under the influence of a substance

1. Fuck
2. You

3 of those are victim blaming, and the other 3 are excusing someone for catcalling based on their personality or use of drink/drugs. It’s shit like this which normalises catcalling, all this bullshit like “WELL THEY WERE X” or “YOU WERE DOING X” and therefore it’s a-okay. No, fuck you.

'cat caller was triggered'?????????????
